Is it reasonable to request a refund for stay during Palmer House Hilton fire?

I stayed at the Palmer House in Chicago last week during the fire

Is it appropriate to ask for a refund? I realize this situation is supposedly "not the hotel's fault" even though it is one of the only fire proof hotels in Chicago according to Wikipedia. A fire is a definite inconvenience and threat to safety- isn't the hotel responsible for preventing them?

I was already displeased with my stay- as a Diamond I was not upgraded to exec level and as this was a one night stay I would think they wouldn't mind reimbursing me. I wrote a letter to the hotel manager who has not responded (6 days have passed). Anyone else asked for a refund in a similar situation?
