I've never been to the Maldives. But my youngest brother has (he's an active/avid very experienced diver - and I am a retired diver - my husband had too many ear/nose problems and we had to quit). Reckon my only words of advice would be that if your friends aren't divers - they will be tempted to do it in the Maldives - and they should be cautious about "resort diving courses" and "resort diving excursions". Most of the diving in the Maldives is - if I remember correctly from my brother - drift diving. It is not the kind of thing you can learn to do well in a week - particularly in a remote part of the world where you may have to rely on your own expertise/experience/equipment more than you might have to do in less remote parts of the world.
On the other hand - I am not a fan of resort diving courses anywhere. And since diving is one of the main attractions of the Maldives - if your friends are at all interested - and they aren't already certified divers - they might invest some time in a local diving course and get certified at home. Good way to decompress from wedding planning (remember that scene in The Graduate where Dustin Hoffman is in the pool

).
Hope your friends have a great honeymoon. Robyn
