Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Big Sur is my old stomping ground as it was an easy half day's drive from where I lived.

For "L"'s I am sure it is different than for us guys, but most of Big Sur is very hetero. There are some really high end resorts which I think would welcome you. The lower end motels (still at like $100/night) where I stayed with my cousin did not seem like the place where I would spend a few days with a bf. Well, maybe we would, but I would not book one king bed.

One year, I stayed in the Ventana which is high end but not as high end as the Post Ranch Inn which is a fantasy place of mine, but soooo $$$! . Ventana was fabulous, though pricey, and there were no gay couples that I could see. (Again that year I stayed with my female cousin). This resort only has, like, 2 rooms with 2 beds so we actually got a rollaway for me to sleep on. The rooms are prettier in real life than how they look on the website. On the website they look sort of "seventies". Check out their website. The views are really that incredible. It is NOT on the beach. (BTW, the beaches in Northern Calif. are cold and rocky. Think Maine.)

Also, there is not a lot to do in Big Sur, unless you are major into the outdoors. Shopping is a one day affair. Don't miss Nepenthe. Though you can buy most of their stuff elsewhere, it is fun stuff and great, classic Big Sur views. (This is where the famous pics are taken from, as you can't actually SEE Big Sur from the road anywhere!).

A good resource and where I found the Big Sur Lodge (should have been called the Big Sur Motel and Tourist Trap) is http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/lodging.html. That lodge was actually OK and we got a special during the off-season for a riverfront "suite" (HA!) and dinner and breakfast for two for, like $115++. The food was GOOD.

A really cool, and romantic tip.... well, MY type of romance/adventure... is to drive south from Big Sur along that majestic RT 1 and turn LEFT in about 20 miles, just north of Gorda. (If you get to Gorda, just turn around a few miles). You can see the small road that goes off RT 1 on any good map. The road climbs up, up, up and up ABOVE the clouds and then takes you through the Ft. Hunter Leggett military reservation and across the mountain ranges and then down to RT 101. Amazing. You might not even see a car for an hour!

(Oh, fill up for gas BEFORE you leave Carmel! Trust me on this one. )

So, if anyone has read this far, I will tell you my very secret place. This is the one that I am saving to stay in with a bf. The place is owned by a gay couple, I think, and has a gay staff... I think.

Anyway, I would ONLY stay in Cabin 10 here. The pics do not do it justice. If there is an earthquake while you are sleeping, you are swimming with the fishes. It is soooo cool! Just south of Big Sur, just a few minutes drive from everywhere: Lucia Lodge.

**sigh** It is sooo romantic.

Have fun and please share with us what happens!
