I'll add one clarification to letiole's excellent post: The rules were relaxed regarding scissors last December but those rules don't matter if you leave the USA, as other countries may not have relaxed their rules to allow the pointed scissors with blades of four inches or less. So if you carry them on while leaving the USA (which you may, according to the TSA's latest rules), you may still have them confiscated (or forced to check them, if possible) when you pass thru a non-USA security checkpoint.
