Currently my wife has an additional card on my SPG Amex that is linked to my SPG account. Recently, she got a letter from Amex saying that "You have been an additional cardmember for a while now..." and offered her to get her own SPG Amex with points to sign up. I called Amex and they told me that she could open the account and have all points go into my same SPG account.

It seems that there is little reason to do this aside from the sign-up bonus. The end result is that she would end up paying an extra fee for the card after the first year and we would have our spending divided onto two accounts. I honestly cannot see what Amex's benefit is to offering this.

Any opinions about this? We have not yet decided if she will sign up for it.
