Nice story. A few years back, before I was so committed (locked in) to United, I tried to change a Continental reservation (ORD-EWR) on short notice when my mother was having emergency surgery. They wanted $1000 for it. I found a $250 short-notice trip on ATA (from Midway) instead. For the next few years, I refused to fly Continental.
