I hate to suggest something dumb (and this might be) but I had a convoluted route that had me goign through Phoenix twice with three days a few years ago. I packed what I needed for the mini-trip in a carryon, and just never picked up my bag on the outbound. On the way back, I claimed it from the luggage desk no problem. Maybe I just got lucky, but it worked fine for me.
