If your agent bought the 2 tickets separately, this statement is correct. UA's responsibility is to get you to LAX. If it's anyone's fault, it's your agent's fault for not thinking the whole process through. Yes, the agent saved you some $$$ by booking BKKLAX and LAXLAS special tickets. However, if the situation described happened, you would be completely out of luck (as was the case you described). Had you bought one ticket from BKKLAS all the way through, it would have been a completely different situation entirely. Yes, it probably cost a little more than the 2 separate tickets, but look at what it cost you in the end.
If the flight times didn't match, that probably was the agent's fault too for not giving you the correct info.
