No it is not a flight number thing. JNB is not one of the cities that you can backtrack from. You cannot fly DXB-JNB-DXB because it is backtracking, and there is no other way to get to / from JNB.
Which is why I think you _can_ do DXB-JNB (assuming you are travelling west) but then need to make you own way to europe for taking say LON-NYC. I think I'm right in saying that LON is west of JNB.
But, as has been mentioned before - you best bet is probably to take a DXB side trip to MRU and then hop a 2 hour flight from there to South Africa.
