It was more than just the hitting the button. I had to finesse it somehow. Sorry, I don't remember the exact steps. (I might have had to remove the new batteries and put them in again. Not sure what else I had to do.)

On mine by Microsoft, with the new batteries installed, I have to push the button on the receiving unit and, while it's doing its flashing lights bit (similar to KITT of
Knight Rider), I have to push the button on the bottom of the keyboard or mouse, and then the lights on the receiver stop flashing.
