The new Madrid T4S Terminal - a brief report

I haven't noticed much talk of the new terminal at Madrid on here, so on arriving at the new T4S this morning, I thought I'd add a few comments.

Upon landing on flight BA 2464 from Gatwick, the First Officer was keen to draw to people's attention that we were landing at a new terminal. To anyone had been to this terminal before, this would not have gone un-noticed.

The terminal is named T4-Satellite. The "Satellite" part of it tends to suggest that it is a smallish terminal a little way from the main Terminal buildings. I couldn't have been more wrong. The terminal is huge. This was inially evident as it stretched pretty much the length of the runway, and then even more so when you step inside.

The first thing you notice is that they've tried to give the terminal a very clinically futuristic feel. All the gate walkways are glass, the interior is very spacious, and even the baggage belts are steel with odd wing-type things above them.

The new Terminal is obviously very clean, light airy. This was made more apparent by the fact that our plane appeared to be one of the only ones around operating at that time... and being the first person off the flight, I felt more like a tour guide with a line of people following me!

Now, this being a huge terminal, it's worth noting that you have to walk. A lot. It was a fair walk from the gate to Immigration. Once you're through immigration, you follow the Exit signs... and just when you think you're must surely be reaching the exit.... you have to take a train journey to the main terminal.

Now this isn't like the monorale link between Gatwick's North and South terminals, this is a full 5 or so mins going at quite a pace.

The train journey and a few escalators and walks later, you arrive at the Baggage reclaim belts, where you finally get a glimpse of people waiting outside. Straight through, and you're out at the Taxi rank.

The Taxi rank is an improvement on the old T1 rank - the line of taxis was huge, with a better queuing system, and a few people on hand to show you where to go.

Overall - this terminal's a great addition, and I,m looking forward to trying the lounge when I return on Friday. I'm making a mental note now to allow a fair bit of time to get from the Terminal entrance to the flight!
