Since you are going to be buying the tickets ANYWAY, this is a really good idea, because you won't spend a year earning status. Immediately you will be earning double miles and flying in F.
If you have status with the airline, you would get priority seating and
better award booking, but no special fares.
You are better off scanning the air fares and snap up the the
good ones when you see them. Thats what I ended up
doing with Southwest. I had at any given time over 10 round trips
booked.
