Nope, AAirpass began in 1981, as did AAdvantage.

I share your skepticism - there aren't very many people with balances over 35 million miles, and most extremely high mileage members got there with credit card miles (like ILUVCITIBANK, who claims to have charged several million, and I have no reason to doubt him).
