As far as FLYi, let's keep a few facts in mind.
1) FLYi came in and offered rediculously low fares; other carriers merely matched FLYi's insane prices. Many times, other carriers didn't even match FLYi's insane prices, they only lowered their prices to be more competitive with FLYi's prices.
2) FLYi's business model was predicated on United, USAirways, or both going out of business. Do you really think that FLYi wouldn't have raised prices if either airline had gone out of business?
3) Due to FLYi's pricing strategy, the airline burned through more than $1 million per day in cash. Investors lost more than $500 million in shareholder value. Bond holders lost $125 million in never to be paid bonds issued by FLYi.
4) You are using a single route as your yardstick for price increases. This is not a valid comparison; you need a much larger sample of routes.
5) Amtrak's (notoriously late, at least in Florida) lowest fare is $102; it will take about 6 hours. If you've ever taken Amtrak, you'll know to pad that number by several hours.
Greyhound's (usually on time) lowest fare is $106 and takes more than 8 hours. If you don't want to pay $203, take Amtrak. If you take Amtrak a few times, you'll never complain about airline service again.
I believe the Travelocity fare is $203 plus taxes and fees. I stated the all-in price.
What do you consider a "fair" fare for a 37-minute flight? WN has plenty of sub- or near-$100 roundtrips for short hops.
There have been numerous news articles about fares going up to other small markets, which can be easily found via Google News.
Why even pull Greyhound and Amtrak into this? Those are not reasonable alternatives.
