As for what the OP did/explained, I am still trying to figure it out and understand the two ticket thing. Unless I can be convinced differently, I would have to agree with fastair here. Please tell me what I am missing.
For the sake of argument (until the OP replies with details), could it be that he/she had a confirmed spot on a different flight, and wanted to us that ticket (standing by or whatever), and wanted to force the confirmed Y ticket as a fallback position in case the flight was too full to take standbys?
That's the only thing I can think of that makes any sense to me...
