Doubletree Tampa Airport Westshore Alarm, a Prank
Stayed here 3/4/06. It was quite an experience. I called for a courtesy shuttle upon arriving at the airport at midnight. None had arrived within 20 minutes, so I called back. "Oh sorry it'll be there in 5 minutes." No shuttle in another 10 minutes, so I walked over to the taxi stand, calling the hotel by cell phone as I walked and telling them I'd be arriving by taxi and charging the hotel. "OK." I entered the hotel to the cacophony of multiple fire alarms. There were guests all over the lobby being told it was safe to go back to their rooms. I strode to the front desk to present my credentials and taxi receipt. "We can only reimburse $10." After discussion, the clerk counted out 13 singles.
I had been assigned to a 10th floor tower room, so I guess that's a good outcome compared to the experience of many others. It wasn't a larger room (suite?) with a bay-facing view like I'd asked for, but there were weddings at the hotel so I was reasonably satisfied. Also, I was on the quieter side facing the courtyard and pool; the other side has an expressway below. The 10th floor has an attractive entrance hallway and a concierge lounge, unstaffed on Saturday night/Sunday morning but with candies, nuts and magazines available regardless. It's a nice space. The concierge had posted her name.
Only problem was the fire alarm was still sounding in all guest rooms at almost 1:00 a.m. A couple of guests paced the hallways as many others returned to their rooms by the two rather ancient elevators responsible for serving 10 floors. I went for a walk in the uninviting streets, being on West Coast time. When I returned after 1:30, the alarms had finally been shut off. I learned the next morning that a wedding guest or visitor had pulled the alarm as a prank. Among those inconvenienced were airline pilots billeted at the property.
I woke up late, reassured by text on the Diamond breakfast coupon that breakfast would be served until noon. But no, when I passed through the lobby to the fitness center about 10, I was told that breakfast ended at 11. Therefore, I had to inconveniently rearrange my schedule. The breakfast buffet itself was reasonably good, though service was somewhat erratic.
Some sort of modest compensation for the breakfast hours switcheroo and the courtesy shuttle delay is supposedly being considered by the hotel. Given the fire alarm problem, I wouldn't have raised the shuttle as an issue if the clerk I had phoned from the airport (same clerk all 3 times) had told me that they were having a problem. What I object to is being told the shuttle would soon arrive, when it possibly never would have arrived. And this after midnight when I'm tired and want to get to the hotel.
