Definitely get a hard case. I have a no name case that is just black cubed rectangle with 2 latches and 2 wheels. No fancy designs or pockets, but I can fit my long driver and my oversized bag in there no problem. I travel with golf clubs 10-12 times a year and each time the clubs are all in one piece (or 14 pieces I suppose). Bought it at Champs Sports for $45 and you could probably get the same thing at Walmart for $30.
