But sometimes you can get lucky. A few years ago I was flying LAX-HNL-GUM-HKG on a CO L/S ticket. I called CO about using NW miles to upgrade and was referred to NW where a new agent allowed me to upgrade the HNL-GUM-HKG legs for 20,000 miles and taxes without the co-pay. As a silver I might have gotten upgraded GUM-HKG but for this flight, getting the guaranteed ug for 5900 miles in the seat was well worth it.
