What is the point (get it - "point" :-) in flying 1,000 or more mile flights if all you will get on a discounted fare regardless is 500 points...
Well sure... if you can fly ORD-MKE-ORD for 134 miles total to earn 1000miles/1000points, why not? (On UA, one could fly LAX-SNA-LAX = 72 miles)
I personally would rather get it done in one fell swoop. Lest we forget...sometimes a 1.0x fare is cheaper than a 0.5x one *cough*W*cough*
