The discount ticket prices we see today force NW to reduce services, otherwise they will go broke.

Why Not? I just flew BOS to LAX nonstop on United for $435. I got upgraded on the return trip. They had a 3 course meal that was delicous. Drinks and hot nuts were first then Hot towels. Then the meal (a choice of stuffed shells or chicken. Then they served coffe and tea. Then they rolled out the ice cream sundae cart. Then another round of drinks. Now thats FC and no this wasn't a premier service flight. CO also has service like this.
