It'd be interesting if there were statistic on whether or not there was any sort of advance warning before severe turbulence hits that would trigger a lit seat belt sign. The one experience I have with this - there was no advance warning at all.

I'd assume that in most instances when injuries are involved, there is no warning because injuries would indicate that the seat belt sign was off and/or flight attendants were not asked to be seated. I'd be curious if statistics back that assumption up.

I will say this - once you've been through something like that you realize just how durable planes really are - to withstand THAT kind of a beating - it makes me chuckle when people worry over relatively minor turbulence. That's nothing.
