I agree that AC would have a hard time filling a -300 on most routes, but presumably they could have bought -200ER's for a lower unit cost than the LR's (although I guess they'd lose out on commonality of engine parts).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but presumably if you're not doing ultra long haul, the operating cost (fuel) of a 200ER should be a lower than a 200LR since you're running the same airframe with a smaller engine. (I'm thinking like gas mileage on a car with a 4 cylinder versus the same car with a V-6).
