I've had the opposite problem from the OP. I reserve a modest car with manual, and most of the time they "upgrade" me to an automatic because they assume I can't drive a stick well enough to bring it back in one piece

Luckily during my most recent experience in Germany, Avis gave me a Mercedes C200 with a six speed manual, I preferred it over any rental car I have ever gotten in the states.
