Close, and there are advantages to both types of awards (stopovers and open jaws with award tickets; ability to earn miles and possibly better availability with TY redemption). At the coach level, TY points (on Chairman and PremierPass) are a great deal. At the biz level, the picture is a bit murkier.
I think it's quite likely the ability to transfer to AA will happen given Citi's and AA's relationship. I also think there's zero chance you will be able to transfer to UA/CO/NW/US/HP given that Diner's Club (owned by Citi) was forced to drop them due to card exclusivity agreements once they became a MasterCard. That really doesn't leave too much. Would like the AA transfer though.
You are forgotting something very important some cards give you double points at hotels + hotels give you airline points too which can be combined to earn free flights even faster. So spending $5000 on your Amex on Vaction could net you well over 5K membership rewards.
