There is an interesting discussion of this topic here. General consensus appears to be that air travel was a liberating force in American sociopolitics.

Neighbours in the Bahamas advised that they travelled freely by plane (Chalks) to various Caribbean and Florida destinations in the '40s. I can't believe that these routes would have been segregated.
