The first part of your question is true - UA *will* status-match US, and vice-versa. However, the second part is incorrect. No speculation at all is necessary. US is and will remain part of the Star Alliance for the foreseeable future
Why someone would want to burn their once-in-a-lifetime US status-match for a couple flights to CLT is a different story. As a UA elite flying on US, you get priority boarding and check-in. The only thing you don't get is free upgrades, and if you really want the snack basket you can buy 500-milers.
