I have recently received my new Aeroplan card and noticed that it has 16 digits, a bar code and a signature line. What does this all mean?

Answer
The new 16-digit Aeroplan card is explained as follows:

BIN: Banking Identification Number (627421). These digits identify the card as belonging to Aeroplan when swiped in a point of sale environment. The BIN is part of the ISO standard.

The next nine digits represent your Aeroplan membership number. Please use this number to identify yourself as an Aeroplan member in your exchanges with Aeroplan and/or Aeroplan partners.

The last digit (CODE) is an ISO compatible check digit used to ensure that the swiped card was correctly read.

Signature line and bar code were incorporated to allow for future program expansion.

Please note that all previous versions of the Aeroplan card remain valid
