Probably the hardest communication I've had was on an overnight train journey in Uzbekistan. Our common language was Russian (I don't speak Tajik or Uzbek, unsurprisingly), and both mine and their Russian was appalling. Train journeys are extremely sociable there, though, and it's a constant surprise how well you can communicate with improvised sign language and a pen & paper!
