It's the amount of information in that graph that makes it really exciting to me, not some confusing grid of squares with numbers in them that don't make it clear what you get for that number, or on what airline, without lots of clicking.
Have a look at the "Month" display on the Skyscanner site. It only does one city pair at a time, but it's not "a confusing grid of square with numbers in them". An evolutionary development could easily produce what your OP was referring to.
