A ticket that is linked to the SE or E member will be upgraded at the same time as the member. At the gate it depends on how the WL is presented to the GA. They should be told the files are linked and then they are supposed to upgrade together. At least that's the way it is supposed to work IMO
Actually, flying home from FRA last week my wife (who does not have status) was not upgraded at the gate at the same time as me. My name was called 2nd or 3rd and so I went up expecting to pick-up both of the new boarding passes, as they knew our files were linked. I was VERY surprised to only pick up my pass -- they told me my wife's ug would have to wait for all other status members to be cleared. We waited and after about 15 names, they finally called her. She had the last seat! I complained about this (while we were waiting for her name to be called) -- as we did not want to be separated on the flight and then lose our seats in the back -- and they said this has always been the way: companions do not get upgraded at the gate with the other status members. This has never happened to me before, including on our flight to FRA just days before!
