Quite simple really -- One point per dollar spent whereas the competition pays half that. For big spends (and lots of smaller ones too) where there is no price differentiation, why go elsewhere? Even with the cost of carrying an AX and (say) a WBC VC, the potential benefit of the accumulated FF points (from my spend profile) is more than the cost of maintaining the AX card with the MR scheme.

And now with VS joining the AX program, it makes award flights to LHR a very attractive option (more so than with the Red Rat).
