Wait - you're flying from Canada to Canada by way of LHR? Good question, but my guess would be yes, you will need a passport.
Most airlines simply will not let you on the flight without one because they don't want the risk of you trying to enter the UK without the required documents (a passport), which would cost them a pretty hefty fine. Never mind that you have a ticket straight back to Canada and plan to transit airside, this is a little too crazy for most airlines to imagine.
P.S. Mileage run?
P.P.S. Did you mean YYT as in St. Johns or YYZ as in Toronto?
