The bright yellow tags were for that purpose and only PMs got/get those. I think the OP is referring to the small cards that indicate your status. They kind of look like a smaller version of your PM/GM/FO wallet sized card.

Those have actually helped me. A few times I was boarding late and the overheads were either full or very close and the FA took my rollaboard and put it in the forward closet with out me having ask. I certainly appreciated not having to gate check my bag. The only reason I could come up with that I got this special treatment was that they saw the bright yellow tags.
