$10 fee (for non-Medallions) to convert to paper tix

Delta Moves To Provide Customers Greater Convenience Time Savings Through Increased Electronic Ticketing

ATLANTA, May 1, 2002 -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE AL) today announced it will issue only electronic tickets (ET) for all ET-eligible travel itineraries, effective immediately. This move facilitates Delta’s efforts to create customer-focused technology solutions that reduce hassle and add convenience for its customers. Today, more than 75 percent of Delta customers worldwide take advantage of electronic ticketing.
Customers can voluntarily request to convert tickets from electronic to paper for $10 at Delta’s worldwide reservations offices, city ticket offices and airport ticket offices. This fee is intended to offset increasing costs associated with paper ticket processing and also is effective immediately.

The fee will be waived for Delta SkyMiles Medallion members and for customers purchasing full fare, unrestricted tickets. The fee also does not apply for paper tickets originally issued or converted by a travel agent; but it will apply if Delta converts a travel agent-issued ticket from electronic to paper.

The most convenient and reliable alternative to traditional paper airline tickets is electronic ticketing. ET provides the means to use Delta’s time-saving technologies like virtual check-in; printing boarding passes at delta.com; over-the-phone exchanges and refunds; and self serve kiosks – all quick alternatives to check-in lines at the ticket counter. Plus, with ET there’s nothing to lose; there is no paper ticket to misplace, forget or have stolen.

Customers with electronic tickets receive a combined receipt and itinerary card that provides the same relevant information as a paper ticket, including a complete flight itinerary, ticket number, fare data and all information necessary for proof of purchase.

Delta will make no further comment regarding the paper ticket fee beyond this news release.
(I can never get a long link to post correctly!)

Seems anti-competitive to me. Also, how can they argue that the $10 is a necessary fee to cover efforts of printing tickets, etc., if they are willing to waive for Medallions.

So much for using full Y tickets between the DL and US shuttles interchangeably.
