Going further, since I can obtain an xONEx with long-haul segments booked "OPN" and thence am nominally free to select flights on any OW carrier, will there now be an add-collect when I call up to reserve e.g. a BA transatlantic segment?
Just a hunch but I bet the airline doing the pricing would assume, if possible, that they will be the default airline on segments where more than one OW operator could be chosen (LAX-LHR, LHR-SYD, LHR-HKG etc.) I certainly don't think it's advanced science. But probably all the better to ticket through AA and around LHR it seems to me. And can you ticket "open" without selecting a carrier on that route?
