I have been on flights before where a gate agent didn't show up till the last minute. There have been other threads that mentioned that there are sometimes staffing shortages. As long as you had confirmed that you were at the correct gate, the fact is that the plane cannot board until a gate agent arrives, so I would have just gotten another drink and waited like everyone else did. Obviously calling India didn't really help, so I would have abandoned that effort rather quickly.
