How does Amtrak know you've travelled?

Folks-

Just out of curiosity, how does Amtrak actually know that you've taken a train in order to credit AGR points? The airlines all scan your boarding pass at the gate, so the computers know who got on the plane. On Amtrak, they just take your ticket and say thank you.... do they somehow scan it later?
