For the costs associated I believe there is far better value in OZ.

Not sure I have ever disagreed with anything more !
Uluru/Ayers Rock (and the Olgas, and that part of the Red Centre) is truly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen, a true wonder of the world. In my humble opinion it is, if you are into nature/the outdoors, one of the few of the globe's 'Must Do Before You Die'.
The nearby Kings Canyon is also wonderful, though you won't have time to get there if you are only there two days.
Yes the resort is a bit ridiculous, very expensive, indeed a con as it is a monopoly - that is what happens when EVERY SINGLE thing there is owned by one company, Voyages (and one or two sub-contractors), including the airport ! (So many people work there btw, and it can hold so many guests, that I was told by a manager there that in high season it becomes in effect the 3rd largest population centre in the Northern Territory !)
But despite this it is truly one of the most unique places on earth, and I have seen quite a lot of the earth (been on safari all over Africa, stood atop Table Mountain and Kilimanjaro, been all over Asia, Europe, Scandanavia, the Americas, etc, etc). I have never met anyone (including friends who were there 3 weeks ago) who has been that disagrees with me.

I can highly recommend taking a sunrise hike around the rock, doing one of the tours of the area and the cave painting with an aboriginal guide, and the dining secret is Rockpool, an outdoor restaurant by the pool at Sails in the Desert Hotel (
"Enjoy al fresco dining at Rockpool... A tapas-style platter menu featuring Mediterranean and Asian influences"). Absolutely stunning food at remarkably good value, espec. considering prices at other restaurants at the resort. Could not indeed believe how cheap it was considering the quality of the food, service, etc.
The outdoor, sunset Sounds of Silence dining experience is also very popular and supposed to be great.
