I was checking the cost of the segments I need and the Cairns-Uluru flight on some the of the days I may fly are already sold out at the lowest price 9 months in advance. Yikes-must be a popular place or Qantas has a monopoly on those flights. I may skip going to Uluru if it's too expensive/difficult to get there.
I believe that award tickets are fine for it, there is no rule that I can see prohibiting it with them ; the residency requirements are that you are not an Australian or NZ Resident so as a US resident, you'll be fine on that score.

The basic restrictions are
TICKET RESTRICTIONS
NOTE:
1. THIS FARE IS RESTRICTED TO OVERSEAS ORIGINATING PASSENGERS TRAVELLING ON A ONEWORLD CARRIER - AA/AY/BA/CX/ EI/IB/LA/QF - TO/VIA AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND.
2. SALE IS RESTRICTED TO NON-RESIDENTS OF AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND. PROOF OF RESIDENCY IS TO BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF TICKETING AND MAY ALSO BE REQUESTED AT CHECK-IN. FAILURE TO PRODUCE SUCH PROOF WILL RESULT IN DENIED BOARDING.
3. TICKETS MUST BE ENDORSED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL TICKET NUMBER

NOT VALID FOR INITIAL SALE IN AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND OR TO RESIDENTS OF AUSTRALIA /NEW ZEALAND

TRAVEL ON THE LAST INTERNATIONAL SECTOR INTO AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND AND THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE FROM AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND MUST BE ON A ONEWORLD OPERATING AND/OR MARKETED FLIGHT WHERE THE INTERNATIONAL TICKET SHOWS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING AIRLINE CODES - AA/AY/BA/CX/EI/IB/LA/QF

NOTE - A CONFIRMED RESERVATION FOR THE FIRST SECTOR OF THE PASS MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND. SUBSEQUENT SECTORS MAY BE OPEN-DATED. --- THIS FARE MUST ISSUED ON A SEPARATE TKT TO THE PSG INTERNATIONAL TICKET AND ISSUED PRIOR TO ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND. --- A MINIMUM OF TWO SECTORS MUST BE PURCHASED PRIOR TO ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND. ADDITIONAL SECTORS MAY BE PURCHASED UPON ARRIVAL. --- THIS FARE IS NOT APPLICABLE FOR GROUP BOOKINGS. NOTE - ALL TVL MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN THE VALIDITY OF INTERNATIONAL TKT WITH WHICH THE FARE IS COMBINED/CONNECTED

The fare for CNS-AYQ and for AYQ-MEL using a pass (LOZPASB) is AUD295 plus tax for each trip. For the CNS-AYQ fare , the base LOZPASB fare is only AUD17 more than the red-e-deal fare ; given that you will pay no GST , the LOZPASB works out as probably the cheapest fare on that route. Perhaps just phone AA and purchase it from them. It may be cheaper there ( you may avoid fuel surcharge milarky )
