Yes, the waiting area in YYT is always filled with family meeting people. That doesn't mean the travellers are from St John's. People drive for hours to pick up their relatives at YYT - there's effectively no public transport, so there's no other choice.

I'm sure you know better, but AFAIK, most McMurray workers come from rural parts of the province - where unemployment is highest - not from town. I've lived and worked in rural NF for 15 years, and I don't know a family here that doesn't have someone working in McMurray.
