I don't know what the nesting has to do with anything. On American, the agents even tell me when I have to nest tickets, usually when I am combining refundable and non-refundable fare codes in the same trip.
Example: midweek ORD-LAS-LAX-OAK is often $1500 cheaper than ORD-SFO or ORD-DFW-OAK on short notice, with ORD-LAS refundable and LAS-OAK non-refundable. The res agents always remind me to book in two nested records, and the ticket agents check me in for the whole trip (and usually reroute me ORD-LAX-OAK if space is available).
So, I think that Cigarman's complaint is definitely justified, although I think $150 is probably a more reasonable compensation. Now if it had been ATL-SLC...
In situations like these, when I've requested it AA has had a supervisor meet me at the gate of my inbound flight with a golf cart, and the supervisor had notified the gate of my situation. Just "documenting the record" doesn't do squat, especially when they don't document it....

To me,
that's what the compensation should be handed out for.
