You must buy the pass before you leave the US, however the cost is distance based and something like AUD 360 for an 1100 mile sector, so it will probably cost a bit more than AUD 500. QF requires travel into Australia on a QF or BA ticket, not sure if your award ticket will qualify (presumably it is issued by CO or AA or AS as an award and not a QFF award). The boomerang pass is fully refundable after the first 2 sectors, but you cannot add sectors and it must be bought before you arrive in Australia.
