If it's a hard, or well padded case you should be fine for checked in luggage.
Skiis aren't a problem... Under the 105" limit as you mentioned.
And it does count as a piece of luggage.

If you still want to use the auto check in, it's possible to use the kiosk, and then go back to the conveyor belt, for oversized bags. Although you should confirm that it's checked correctly.
