This argument doesn't make sense. You may have flown on an award ticket on a flight in which every seat was filled, but that does not mean every seat was sold. Delta may not have been able to sell any seats on that flight, but it still could have been full--with non-revs and award travelers. Unless I can be flexible about time and place, I never expect to get an award ticket. But when I am able to work my travel around flights with seats that might otherwise go out empty, DL and I are both winners. I get to use accumulated miles and DL gets to take them off their books. Win/win.

And yes, I have been able to use miles for travel to Europe when my dates were real flexible and I was able to fly to cities which had award availability. The over-the-water flights I was on flew out with empty seats. Most of the airlines have yield management pretty well figured out, and they don't give away tickets they think they can sell. That's no news flash. I have never gotten my first choice for any award travel, but then I have never expected to. If I have to be in a certain place on a particular date, I buy a ticket. No whines.
