I may have a flight on United coming up later in the year to Japan. I have tried searching the boards and the FAQ, but I can't quite find the answer. Is there anyway outside of miles to get an upgrade?

Do any of the certificates allow upgrades on international flights, assuming I can wrangle one? I have no status on UA (silver on US).
