I stayed two consecutive nights at the Westin in Washington, DC. The first night I requested a king bed, as I was by myself. For the second night, I was meeting a friend and we were splitting a room, so I requested two double beds. It counted as two one-night stays. Would this always work, or was this an exception?
Two different reservations? So you effectively checked out of the king room and then checked in to the double room?

While still not two stays according to the rules of the program (they're very clear on this point), in practice, I suspect it would work more often than not -- at least until someone at SPG audits your account and takes all the duplicates away.
