NW did have to comp some rooms due to the storm. According to the local news, an AMS flight was diverted here to DTW. I think it was bound for NY. Some of the passengers were put up in nearby hotels, since they cannot get out of Detroit until tomorrow or Tuesday.
Of course there are always exceptions to every rule in air travel. Intl flights also have different rules than domestic flights. The flight from AMS-NYC is probably 5 or 6 hours. The storm probably started and/or intensified after the plane was enroute. So a diversion became necessary. At that point connecting flights and final destinations were all out of whack so it makes sense for NW to do something.
