The concern is that my wife will not let me pay that kind of money for her - she will insist that we get a cheap ecoonomy rtw and just upgrade as many sectors as possible.

As I am a United 1K , it is easiest to be upgrade flights on United rather than LH or SQ. Hence, why it is preferable to get a SYD-USA- Germany return on UA.
