Where did you get the companion certificate? Mine was for spending $25K on my AMEX Plat Skymiles card. If that's what yours is, there's a fare structure enclosed with the cert. I just booked ABQ-ATL for my sister and brother in law for Memorial Day weekend. The fare was $318, plus junk fees and ticket charges. I had to redeem it at a Delta ticket office and pay with my AMEX card. The TA did waive the $10 second ticket charge, so both tickets together were $400.05. It's really irritating I had to pay $15. because they won't do it on line. Saturday 5/27 was blacked out so the're coming on Sunday and staying a week. There wasn't much choice on the flights. I requested the 6:00 AM to ATL, but it wasn't an option. How full could it be on Sunday morning of a holiday weekend? We just hope Delta is still flying then.
