HEL has direct intercontinental Finnair flights to like 10 destinations in Asia and the whole country has a population of 5 million people. And Finnair is making good money at the moment on it´s Asian routes. That is only to say that an airport doesn´t necessarily need to have a huge population or business base around it to have intercontinental flights. An international airport with good connections is attracting businesses nowadays, so Berlin needs good connections. This investment is absolutely necessary for the region, I think.
